Lincoln despised war but viewed it as the only salvation of the Union. --and that the government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. As president, this former Illinois lawyer and congressman ensured the strength of his Republican Party, issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and succeeded in the preservation of the Union. He was assassinated April 1865, but his hope survives-- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.
