Our Lady of Charity, also known as Our Lady of El Cobre, is revered as the beloved patroness of Cuba and a powerful symbol of faith, hope, and divine protection. Around the year 1608, two brothers and an enslaved companion set out across the Bay of Nipe in search of salt. As they journeyed over the water, a sudden and violent storm arose, placing their lives in great danger. In their fear, they turned to prayer, calling upon the Virgin Mary for protection. Just as swiftly as the storm began, the skies cleared and the waters calmed.

It was then that they witnessed a miraculous sight—a statue of the Virgin Mary floating upon the water, holding the Christ Child and remaining completely untouched by the waves. Carefully bringing the statue into their boat, they returned safely to shore. In gratitude and reverence, chapels were soon built in her honor, and devotion to Our Lady of Charity spread throughout the region and beyond.
